It has been 5 full years since the superstar jumped to death from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong on April 1st, 2003. To this date I still don't quite understand why he committed suicide. Anyway, his has become a true legend among his fans. His legacy will go on!
I am not a big fan of Canton-Pop (or HK-Pop) music and did not listen to too much of them when I was living in Canada. However, I did follow a few Canton-Pop singers (more on this later) and Leslie was one of them. Back in the old days, I would take a bus to Chinatown just to pickup his latest albums (I am talking about records...not even CDs…I am old!). I still remember watching his concert at the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. That was the only concert by a Hong Kong singer I ever watched in Canada.
Guess who were the other HK-pop singers I liked? They were, of course, Leslie Cheung, Danny Chan, Wong Kai Kui (the lead singer and lead guitarist of Beyond, the greatest Hong Kong band ever) and Alan Tam. Believe it or not…all of them are deceased
except Alan Tam.
Ready? Here comes the strangest part (that has been bothering me all these year): I had their autographs except Alan Tam’s. See the pattern!? Luckily, I had not been getting any famous people’s autograph for over 20 years. I only did that when I was a teen. But I always wonder what-if if I also got Alan’s (OK…I know Alan Tam still has a huge fan-base after all these years. Please don't flame me.).
Anyway, I am writing this just to pay tribute to Leslie. Dear Leslie, we will remember you forever! Please rest in peace.
